Rain Forest in Kolkata

The 480 acre Eco-Park in New Town, Rajarhat, Kolkata is being developed through a Master Plan created by M/s Pradeep Sachdeva & Associates, a Delhi - based firm who designed the Delhi Haat and Garden of Five Senses. We had a review meeting last Saturday. The whole zone is divided into 54+ zones. One of these zones is a RAIN FOREST zone - a 9 acre plantation area divided into three parts (A, B and C) each with characteristic specialised species of carefully chosen plants.

The saplings in the Rain-Forest zone have just been planted - if you observe carefully on the left on your way to the airport as you cross the Synthesis Building to the right - you can see the fences erected to keep cattle away.
Here is a picture that I took today morning on way to office:-

  3. This is a naive intiative of course, which would help not only reduce carbon footprint, but can also boost tourism. In Florida or in New Jersey, they have indoor sections of tropical rain forest setups alongwith the plants and birds specific to those regions which is visited by thousands of tourists. Why can't we think on similar lines where we have the climate support. However, garden of five senses is a great creation, and i hope the group turn out something promising for Kolkata.

  4. I'm not sure what is meant by "naive" here, but it is worth mentioning that the architect firm of Delhi that developed the Garden of Five Senses is also developing the Eco-Tourism Park in New Town, Rajarhat.

  5. By "naive" i meant the simplicity of the idea here, in a positive note of course...the place is "Rajarhat" which would now be hosting a "rain forest", so i thought that having a rain forest in a concrete jungle will always be appreciated for the residents both from an environmental or from a tourism perspective. I would also request if you could promote setting up a state-of-the-art Aquarium/Marine Center in Digha maybe.

  6. Thank you Sir
I have been following this place for the last 6 years.
I always dreamed to open a fish snacks concept kiosk in this place.
Hope this dream will never come true but the birds will surely come back.
Here I like to mention that previously lots of migratory birds used to come here in winters. They stopped because of the developments .
After the place is the full of trees and a basic silence can be created they will surely come back
