Mosquito Larva Control using BTI

In April this year, we'd commissioned a study by a professor of zoology for suggesting ways to control mosquitos. After extensive field trials, he'd given a set of recommendations to control the mosquito menace in New Town. This essentially consisted of short and long term solutions. Short term actions included drain cleaning, covering sanitary outlets, introducing larvivorous fish etc. Long term actions included plantation of mosquito repellent plants and use of BTI (bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI) as larvicides.

I had written to the State Health department to advise us how to use BTI to control mosquitos. Meanwhile we continued from NKDA to undertake fogging (see picture below), release fishlings (we'll release another lot tomorrow) and spreading mosquito repellent oil. Just recently, we received a detailed reply from the health department. It acknowledged that use of BTI is one of best ways of mosquito larval source management and is recommended by WHO too. It is also considered a very eco friendly way of mosquito control. They have also very much appreciated the work and documentation of NKDA in controlling mosquitos.

NKDA plans to use BTI very shortly in New Town.
