"Mission Green"
I held a video conference with all DMs yesterday. Chairmen of HQ Municipalities and Development Authorities were also present. The idea was to create a synergy among the ULBs, Development Authorities and District Administration.

TOI report also mentions about beautification of Newtown with participation from reputable builders. Applaudable initiative!
ReplyDeletePlease also ensure long-term sustainability of the beatification projects by including maintenance and continuous up-gradation as part of the initial plan of the projects themselves (I wish plan for funding of long-term maintenance becomes part of any infrastructure project plan).

'Community concept' to spruce up Rajarhat
KOLKATA: The Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) has come up with a "community concept" to develop Rajarhat New Town as a futuristic smart city. A meeting has been held with reputable developers to fast track beautification of the township.
"Developers have been asked to come up with proposals as to how the areas surrounding their complexes could be beautified. This is what we call the "gated community concept". The developers showed much enthusiasm on the issue. We will hold another meeting in November," said Hidco CMD Debasis Sen.
Among the issues that were highlighted include beautification of footpaths, developing parking lots, waste disposal system and direction markers.
"Parking spaces should be identified in the township. There is a need to install road direction markers as commuters often face problems," said a Hidco official. Hidco is now under the urban development department's jurisdiction and if required, other agencies like Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) could also be involved to execute the beautification project.
Developers said they were eager to contribute to the project. "We will come up with plans as to what we can do to beautify the township," said Ambuja Realty group chairman Harsh Neotia.
The civic infrastructure of Rajarhat New Town requires a thorough makeover. At present, there is no proper traffic system. Solid waste disposal system and public transport system is yet to be developed. Residents also complain of not getting proper drinking water. The township's greenery gets battered every time a highrise building comes up. It has been noticed in places that the footpaths are not properly maintained and looked after.
Among some of the development works that are going on, the Hidco authorities have started conducting a survey of a huge waterbody as to how the waterbody could be properly developed and maintained.
The Hidco authorities are also trying to utilise the land that is available to them. The authorities have floated expression of interests to auction two plots of two acre each to set up a trauma care centre and a geriatric centre. The authorities are already receiving applications from organisations showing interest to buy the plots.
Thanks for the contribution. Earlier,advertisement agencies used to be entrusted to maintain traffic islands etc. This model has failed since these agencies lose interest once their hoardings are in place. So we are now involving stakeholders who are actually present. It is in their interest as well to keep up the place on a continuing basis.
