Infosys & Wipro Land

We had a meeting yesterday with Minister of IT regarding land for Infosys and Wipro at 4 Camac Street building. I reconnected with some of the old staff when I was Chief Electoral Officer in 2006 onwards. There were some panchayat representatives and some there was some loudness. Here is a story that appeared in today's Times of India:

"HIDCO, says, “I do not agree that there is a recession in demand. We have recently allotted 50 acres to software giant Infosys which has been fully paid for. We are in the process of allotting land to Wipro. We have top class infrastructure and dedicated power companies. Also we have one of the best roads in town.” According to Sen, contrary to the perception that Rajarhat is facing a slowdown, Hidco has recently received 30 responses each for its two 2 acre each health care project. “We are going to launch another set of plots and the decision on the health care land allotment will be done soon,” adds Sen."

So we didn’t object,” said one of the farmers who haven’t received their cheques yet. "

  5. What a catch-22 situation....It’s tricky and sensitive, however, hope Govt of the day deliberates and takes a practical approach towards when to intervene instead of not intervene at all:

    Monday, 28 November 2011 19:12

Wipro has bought 50 acres from the state government for setting up its second campus at New Town, Rajarhat, in the north eastern fringes of the city. The upcoming project promises an investment of over Rs 1,000 crore and jobs for at least 15,000 IT professionals.

Wipro has already paid 25%, or Rs 19 crore, of the price of the Rajarhat land. Infosys CEO S Gopalakrishnan had met erstwhile chief minister Bhattacharjee around this time last year to push his own project. "

    On Infosys:

"“There is no complication,” said Debashis Sen, principal secretary of the urban development department. “There are only a few farmers, maybe one or two, who continue to oppose the acquisition. The issue will be sorted out; Infosys won’t face any difficulty.”"

  10. An ET article on MP Govt's land allotments to Infy and TCS at Indore may be of interest as it has put some interesting conditions:
    http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/ites/mp-government-agrees-to-allot-100-acres-of-land-to-tcs-infosys/articleshow/11291008.cms

    * 100 acres of land each to Information Technology giants
    * at a rate of Rs. 20 lakh per acre
    * the loss suffered by the Indore Development Authority (IDA) due to allotment of subsidised land would be compensated by the state government.
    * condition that they will provide jobs to 100 engineers per acre and will also give 50 per cent jobs to domiciles of Madhya Pradesh.
