Quadricopter

This afternoon at Eco Park, there was the demonstration of flying drones, being unmanned aerial vehicles. I'd read about drones in Dan Brown's latest book "Inferno" and seen one at the Independence Day parade at Red Road earlier this year. This "udaan" event was organiised by Prantakatha in co-operation with Hidco. I was interested to see if such quadricopter drones could be used for surveillance in the vast Eco Park, because there is no way closed circuit TVs can be used in the 480 acre park.
The demonstration was quite a success and I've asked for further modifications and estimates.
Here is a picture:

I received a notification bearing no. 26/6/12-PPD from Govt of India, Ministry of Finance regarding procurement of energy efficient electrical appliances. It says that split Air Conditioners purchased by government departments should have 5 star ratings of BEE under normal conditions where annual usages are expected to be 1,000 hours or more. It can be of 3 star rating for Conference Rooms etc where occasional use is expected. It further says that ceiling fans and water heaters should invariably be of 5 star category.

I forwarded this to Chief Engineer (Electrical) for following the norms.

  1. Sir,
When are we (Bengali Anglers) going to get a chance to wet lines in the waterbody of Eco Park? Angling and other water sports were part of the initial plan (I read in this blog long back). And few angling docks were to be constructed for that purpose. Is that still part of the plan?

  3. Subhanjan Saha is a total Sham who is exploiting the ignorance of media about Aeromodelling hobby. He has blocked his facebook account itself to certain users who aware and have achieved real progress in FPV to keep his Hoax alive, since he was getting exposed when confronted with veracity of 10 Kms range and 5000 ft tall claims to media where he is flying only RC plane demo for only 200mtrs within visual range. When he has not even flown beyond visual range on video downlink feedback his all claims of drone and bomb droping and survillence are all total sham. He needs to atleast fly 5Kms beyond visual range to prove a worth while demonstration. He should at least take part in MUAV competitions organized for students by DRDO to know what other colleges and universities are doing. With his contraption he is highly unlikely to win the Rs 3 lacs prize money but At least he can prove his worth of his claim by flying 5Kms beyond visual range. No Doubt DRDO is not paying any head to this Hyperventilation to media.

    2. Thanks to Debdeep Mukherjee! Forget about talent getting a chance, the crisis is much more deep rooted than that! The question is why would a college boy having no background in Aeronautics (read privilege, for obvious reason if you search where and at what cost you can get degree in aeronautics) should get such media attention? When there are organised groups who have spent awful resources on this? Therefore the conclusion is that he needs to be lynched and publicly! Does not matter if you have not allowed him even "natural justice"! Did not we see the same issue of "pedigree" and therefore the "witch hunting" happening in Politics, Bollywood, Sports and what not? The closure is lynching! The country should only have people with pedigree! No wonder why venture capital is nearly nil in this barrel land!

  4. With no background on Aeromodelling, (sorry for my ignorance), I wondered what's going on here. But later found out that "Subhanjan Saha is a 21 year old boy from Kolkata who has built an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) popularly known as Drone".

Without getting involved much with what happened before and any existing controversies, I believe talent needs a chance and specially if a person from our own Bengal is trying to establish something, that must be encouraged. Looks like "Guiding Saha in his efforts is the NGO Prantakatha and Abhijit Mukherjee of the S.N. Bose Centre for Basic Sciences.". If above blogger is Mr. Bappaditya Mukherjee of Prantakatha, I thank him for standing by him.
Criticism is part of any success story and a good tool of validation and improvement which should be encouraged. However, we should keep it constructive. If Mr. Sandy or anyone has technical points about the feasibility, applicability and safety of the initiative, I believe best it to take it up with Chief Engineer (Electrical) of HIDCO. I am sure it will not be done at the cost of safety for visitors and much before it become too much wastage of public money.
Our CM always wants local talents to be promoted and even this initiative fails let there be a chance for Subhanjan. If the Government does not stand by, who will?

    1. Its so great to have voices like you Mr Avick! Thats been precisely the point! Talents need mentoring! Unfortunately in India becuase of prevailing colonial mindset we allow talents which have back up (money and pedigree)! Result, brain drain, loss of talent pool and pushing youngsters back to desperation! I completely agree with you that our CM now is really trying hard to encourage local talents! And this event is the only begining of a bigger journey where Subhanjan will have to put more financial and other resources in place to make it fool proof! But why to discourage such a humble student when he is making some headway! And what in the name of some aero modelling community some over jealous people are doin is actually public bullying of a budding talent! Is this a way to ask for scientific queries? Is this a way to question someone's talent? They are doing a witch hunting of this 22yrs old boy on Facebook, on all other digital platform with only intention of initiating trauma to a budding innovator! What a shame!!
