Video Conference with Development Authorities

I held a video conference with the Development Authorities of UD Department from Writers' Buildings yesterday. Participating were KMDA, KIT, HIT, ADDA, HDA, SJDA, MKDA, NKDA, BDA, JDA and SSDA. The basic objectives were (1) Review of progress of State Plan Schemes (2) Initiating Road / Bridge / Flyover projects under JnNURM even beyond Kolkata/Asansol under UIDSSMT. Before that, I discussed the procedures with Mr B.P.Gopalika, Secretary Municipal Affairs, in the context of the discussions held last Wednesday at the National Conference at Delhi.

We had a very detailed brainstorming session yesterday afternoon with Transport Department, CSTC, WBSTC, CTC, TIDC, KMDA and Hidco at Hidco Bhavan Conference room about setting up an inter city, inter state and inter national bus terminus at New Town. A sub committee has been formed who will also visit Chennai and Bangalore projects and give specifications. Here is a group photo taken at site after the meeting yesterday:

  1. Nice to see that atlast the much needed inter-state/city/national BUS TERMINUS project in NEW TOWN has been initiated. Hope it is of International standards and becomes another Kolkata pride to match up with the well planned SATELLITE CITY and providing connectivity with the Central Kolkata - Esplanade and Park Street to make NEW TOWN, RAJARHAT more accessible.

  2. Dear Mr. Sen,

It's really nice to see that some forward looking steps are being taken regarding new inter state/city/national bus terminus for the city of Kolkata.

Are there also plan to improve the road connectivity to this new bus terminus from north of the city? Specially, which route do you plan for any north-bound buses (this really means most of West Bengal starting from North 24 Paraganas to Cooch Behar and also Bangladesh) to use for entering and leaving the city? Or are they suppose to suffer from the Birati/Barasat Jinx forever?

We understand that this is a difficult problem and not really expecting any overnight solution. However, if no steps are taken now, with increasing traffic on the narrow NH-34 and even narrower Birati connector to Kalyani Expressway, the most of Bengal will eventually get detached from its capital city, literally!

    Best regards,
    Golam M Hossain

  3. Dear Mr. Sen,

One of the largest cities in the world should not have a low quality meeting place like the convention centre you had written about earlier in your blog.

this is how a convention center should look like:

Please let us know what happened to it?

    Thanks!
