World Bank, Luxembourg and Town Hall

A ten-member delegation from the World Bank met me today to take stock of the progress of projects under the National Ganga Programme. The team was led by Dr Genevieve Connors who is now the Team Leader now for this project. Others in the team included Srinivasa Rao, Mehul Jain, A S Harinath  and others. Kripan Roy of Govt of India was also a part of this delegation.
We reviewed the progress of the schemes. I told about the difficulties encountered by the States and argued for a positive and dynamic framework.
I will attend a meeting at Ministry of Environment & Forest, Govt of India, at Delhi on Monday.

Mr Gaston Stronk, Ambassador of Luxembourg in India, was in Kolkata today. Mr and Mrs Stronk visited Rabindra Tirtha today morning. I accompanied them and explained the concept. They seemed to quite like the two exhibition halls displaying Tagore's works and portraits. In course of conversation, I recalled my visit to Luxembourg in 2003.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a long meeting at Town Hall today with all Ministers, Secretaries and DMs. To a question I replied that construction of Banglar Hat was going on in full swing and that preparations for receiving complaints at New Town was being made.

Here is a picture clipping from today's Anandabazar about water zorbing in Eco Park :

Last Poila Baisakh, we had the citizens' meet at Rabindra Tirtha. It was good to see the report in Telegraph today that the hard work that we are doing is being recognised at least by some. A clipping:

And finally a clipping about the flagging off of a Ladies Bus on the same day (Poila Baisakh):

  1. Sir,
You need not to be recognised/ criticised by the media, anything done under your good leadership will be recognised by the people of our state.
It is really surprising-when you visit Ecopark very next morning to find the damage done by KALBOISAKHI. It only happens if the 'duties/job' suppressed by our 'passion' to do the work.

  2. Was wondering whether you are unwell as the update came after really long time. Usually you do not delay blog updates for so long.

Sir, yet to see any new tender for rest of the plots in New Town finance Hub.

Was delighted to see the tender for DPR for alternate connection to South Kolkata / EM Byepass.

Here, we are planning to intersect EM Byepass near Metropolitan. Thus traffic on Chingrihata junction will be reduced.

It would have been great if we would have made connection from AA3 to Basanti Road and then via Chowbhaga Road to Ruby and Kalikapur. People could have avoided Science City as well as Ruby and from Kalikapur could have taken Anwar Shah Road connector to different parts in South Kolkata.

    1. There was a plan to build road from Basanti Road to PAS Connector by KMDA.

      http://www.telegraphindia.com/1090702/jsp/calcutta/story_11152770.jsp

Now, that road should happen as traffic load near Ruby crossing is already unbearable and it will be great if HIDCO comes up with another elevated stretch from Basanti Road ( Chowbhaga / Bamanghata)to E-W MAR in AA3 , thus byepassing EM Byepass altogether.

Your intervention is needed Sir for syncing up with KMDA and making them progress fast.

    2. Yes, it will also help IT professionals at Bantala IT Park and employees at Leather Complex. There is an immediate need of alternate 4/6 lane connector road from New Town to Bantala IT Park.

  3. Was there in Kolkata last week for around 10 days. Felt bad as could see 3 JNNURM projects progressing really really slowly.

    1. EM Byepass Road widening ( saw everyday only 5-6 people working in the stretch between Ruby and Patuli)
    2. Science City -PC flyover ( could not find any person doing any work)
    3. Pipeline laying for Dhapa water treatment plant ( never found a trace of any person working).

Sadly in all these 3 projects at least, there is no land acquisition issues involved.

    1. As far as EM Byepass widening is concerned, stretches between Science City and Ruby where land filling has been done years ago is having a thick coat of grass. Hawkers have started sprouting and currently the filled area is getting used for parking buses , matadors and taxis.

Also in a large portion, overhead electric lines of CESC and WBSEB needs to go underground as they are currently located just beside the existing stretch of EM Byepass. Coordination across Govt departments is needed.
