Innovations in Urban Governance - National Conference

Minister Firhad Hakim and I am attending the National Conference at Vigyan Bhavan New Delhi since yesterday. It is about Innovantions in Urban Governance. Sam Pitroda, Chairman of National Innovation Council, was a key speaker. Union Ministers Kamal Nath & Girija Vyas also spoke in the inaugural session. The two-day conference will end today. The first day's session was dominated by group of Mayors from Uttar Pradesh / Rajasthan who screamed that despite 74th Amendment of the Consttution, no powers were given to them and state government and their officers by passed them completely. Minister Hakim on his part explained that in West Bengal the devolution of powers to the Urban Local Bodies was full and effective as mandated in the Constitution and that there was no such issue. Here is a photo of the inaugural session:

  2. There is a plan to shift the Esplanade bus terminus, it is good thing to do. The vacant area can have a public transport museum. It can showcase all the buses that are and were used in kolkata. It can also have the Trams, the Taxis and the rickshaws. And if possible some boats also. Public transport is an integral part of every kolkatan, so a public transport museum will be wonderful. It could be open air with sheds that could mix nicely with the surrounding.

  3. Sir,please look into the concerns voiced by Ghuni residents in your previous topic "limit of other uses"We residents of Ghuni area ,Canal Bank Road kindly request you to consider the bridge over Bagjola canal.Ghuni road is congested because of many small shops and we residents of Sunrise Greens,PS Ixora feel ,with growing population in this area,a bridge is need of the hour.Other residents like Saptarshi Basu,Parimal also elaborated this concern of ours in your blog today. Also will request you to arrange for suitable lightning lamps in canal bank road to avoid mishaps for residents and commuters.Road is narrow beside canal and increasing vehicles will add to more worries unless road is widened or bridge is built over canal.

  4. Please replace all Kolkata trams with the beautiful Tatra C3 trams of Vienna. They are the ones which fit with Kolkata's heritage and architecture. Please search online for pictures and videos. More people will begin using the rams and traveling in trams will become the thing to do.

  5. I made a mistake in my earlier post. The make of the tram is Tatra T3. You can read more about it here:

  6. Please bring back our trams in the viable routes - also elevated areas for trams should be reintroduced. a modern city has less cars - more pavement, more trams, more bicycles.
