297 units of Affordable Housing for Allotment

Today, Hidco has published advertisement inviting application for allotment of affordable housing units for the Economically weaker Section. There are 297 such flats for allotment. All are in New Town Kolkata, spread in two existing housing estates called Balaka and Alaka. Here is the picture of the brochure, available for sale from some branches of Axis Bank:
The price varies from Rs. 2.66 lakhs to Rs. 3.47 lakhs. Flats will be allotted through lottery. Here is the advertisement that appeared in several newspapers today:

There is a special counter in the Hidco Stall at 'Bengal Builds' where various queries are being attended to. Incidentally, Hon'ble CM had kindly inaugurated the Hidco stall by cutting the ribbon of the Hidco stall before she went to the dais.

  1. Sir,

Khabar 365 report seems pretty detailed. But the font is appearing so small that it is totally unreadable. Only thing that is somewhat understandable is a whole new bunch of projects are on the available. If possible can you please upload image with a better resolution of the content?

Long back, I had requested you to consider casinoes in Digha / Mandarmani. Today ToI Bangalore carried out an article that Maharashtra Govt is planning this in Matheran, a small hill town located near Bombay.

If we can start this in DSDA towns, I think it can be a good catalyst for quickly bringing this towns in tourist radar.

  2. Sound that your UK trip was very fruitful. Having spent 17 years in the UK, and actually lived on the Thames waterfront for 2 years, always felt that Kolkata had such a prospect along the river.

The promenade ought to become a hub for the young (clubs and eateries), the culturally inclined (museums and galleries) and the shoppers (ethnic shops etc). The river should also be easily accessible from the city centre, eg Parkstreet/ Esplanade. What about an architecturally attractive walkway !!!! Lastly, people must also live there, ie, high rise apartments etc to make it a 24 hour happening place, like London is.

Some of this is probably far fetched, but, certainly feasible. It is amazing what Singapore has done to its waterfront in the last 10-12 years.

    1. Thanks Shuvro for the idea. I completely agree with you about making the promenade a hub for the young.

Also appreciable is the idea of high rise apartments around it. May be as we get the permission from defence to beautify more stretches along the Ganges, we need to start thinking of this.

  3. Flats for EWS sections is definitely a very good move. Thats the first step of making the city slum free. We probably need them in much larger numbers. There has been an observation in Bombay. In the slum redevelopment projects, many original slum dwellers sold their flats or rent them out ( where selling was not allowed) and moved to new slums. This was because the apartment maintenance fee was too high for them. We need to take care of that in the EWS Flats that we build.

Lets have these flats in high-rises so that we can accomodate many more families.

Any plans of slum re-development in Kolkata?

  4. There is a school of thought that says that high-rise buildings are not suitable for the EWS as the cost of operation & maintenance (lifts etc) is too prohibitive.
About Slum Redevelopment: RAY (Rajiv Awas Yojana) and BSUP (Basic Services for the Urban Poor) are two prominent programmes of the MoHUPA, GoI being implemented by MA Deptt / KMDA

    1. I agree with this school of thought. Highrises with lifts cannot be viable for the EWS. So max G+3 should be implemented for successful slum development.

Or else, include one or two floors of commercial development and use their rent to cross subsidize maintenance for EWS.

  5. Families with household income less than Rs 10,000 per month can apply for EWS flats for which applications are being received

  6. Though the Kolkata real estate market is not consider to be the most vibrant market in the country, but new launches of flats in Kolkata are thus witnessing across the segments. The market for both the premium as well as the affordable category of the residential segment seems to be good in 2012. Since, there were no major industrial developments in West Bengal, the demand for the commercial property seems to be highly sluggish. In the year 2013, the market over here is stagnant owing to the lower demand for the luxury real estate in the city. It is increasingly difficult in order to secure the government approvals for all the new projects. Hence, the rising cost of building materials remain much more concern for the developers. The projects which were launched in the mid 2011 was falling in the rate Rs 3400 per sq ft has now jumped to Rs 5400.
