At MoEF, Govt of India, Delhi , we had a meeting with Dr Rajiv Sharma Mission Director NGRBA, MrVivek Wadekar, National Project Director, Society of Integrated Coastal Management, Ms Genevieve Connors of World Bank and others about the possibility of extending NGRBA to Sagar / Gangasagar. The issue was that NGRBA is concerned about urban areas but Gangasagar is a rural area. On the other hand, we argued, Gangasagar was a major location in Ganga and should be included in the programme.
It was agreed that this would be possible in view of the special importance of Gangasagar to include projects in Sagar island but that there should be no overlap with the projects being undertaken under the World Bank assisted ICZM project.
This was a major decision that we could achieve. We will soon prepare a Concept Note and include few projects under NGRBA.
I will return to Kolkata this evening.
What is NGRBA?
ReplyDeleteNational Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) is a financing, planning, implementing, monitoring and coordinating authority for the Ganges River.
DeleteAfter Ganga Action Plan failed to have the desired impact, we now have an enhanced mechanism to get this done.
ok...but who clean the ganga??
DeleteReal good news. Great effort no doubt !!!!
ReplyDeleteThis will be a boost to pollution reduction as well as riverfront beautification and a boost to tourism.
I looked at wb urbandev website and the projects happening under NGRBA.

Almsot all ( except 1 or 2) are GHAT Development projects. I think we should have a little more of STP and if possible, riverfront beautification stuff.
